I am a youth also. Even though we come from different family backgrounds and graduated from different universities, with different GPAs, most of us all have almost similar mindsets, character, great potentials, fears, doubts and so on. I have had the privilege to work with (and also try to work with), encourage, motivate, build businesses with and learn from many passionate youths in the last one year and I have learnt a lot in the process. Some lessons were very intense, some were complicated and some were just plain funny but all were special lessons to me. I was able to take note of some things that kept reocurring this last one year and today I want to share with us some reasons why the average Nigerian youth is unproductive, why we sit at home idle claiming there is no job and also why our parents and leaders should understand us, be patient with us and also learn to work with us no matter what.

Most youths especially we that went to the University have never tried our hands on much before. We spent most of our school days preparing for exams when we should have been preparing for life after school instead. We cram formulars ACC 101 from cover to cover but never learn much about ourselves. Lol. The words of our primary school teachers, lecturers and even our parents “You can’t do this”, “You can’t do that” “Thats not how its done” “It won’t work that way” still echo loud in our heads. I remember inviting a friend for a business presentation and 2 seconds after she stepped into the buiding she said “I can’t sell”. In less than a minute she was already afraid of failing telling me what she can’t do. This is the same person who prides herself for being smart already saying No even before she heard what i had to offer. The school system was designed to punish us if we failed so we came out of school with that mindset walking with our heads low scared to try our hands on things that will better us. And even if we manage to start, we give up after the first two discouragements.
