This is certainly a palatable news to all Nigerian Polytechnic and College of Education Students.

Report has it that the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP and College of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU have accepted the installmental payment of arrears.

Supervising Minister of Education, Barr. Ezenwo Nyesom Wike announced that with the declaration by the leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU, that they will accept the installmental payment of arrears, the end of the prolonged strike actions is within reach.

The Minister spoke with journalists in Abuja after a meeting with top officials of the Tertiary Education department of the Federal Ministry of Education on the resolution of the strike actions by ASUP and COEASU.

He stated that with the decision by both unions to accept the offer of two installmental payment, which has been the end point of several negotiations between the Federal Government and the two unions, the way forward will be for the unions to put in writing their acceptance of the offer.

He said that the position of COEASU and ASUP to renege on all previous agreements with the Federal Government, it would be necessary for the unions to communicate their new position in writing and not through newspaper clips.

“The news that the unions have agreed to two installmental payment in a press conference is a step forward. The next step is for them to commit in writing. I am convinced that the strike actions will be resolved in a few days as our commitment to see the end of these strike actions have always been unwavering”, the Minister said.

On the bridging of the dichotomy between HND and First Degree, the Minister stated that the President has approved the bridging of the two certificates. He said that the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Pius Anyim has communicated to him the approval of the President in a letter, empwering him to set up the committee to be headed by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education.

The Minister stated that bridging the dichotomy between HND and first degree is a process, which will not end in a few weeks as the unionists want Nigerians to believe. He noted that the most important thing is that the Federal Government has commenced the process.
He urged all Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic staff to resume work as the Federal Government has met all major demands of their unions. He said that there is no need for the unions to embark on blackmail, since all issues have now been settled.
