Departing Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Unwana in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, Professor Francis Ogbonnaya Otunta, has appeal to the striking Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) and the appropriate Federal Government agencies to return to the negotiating table in order to put an end to the academic logjam rocking polytechnic institutions.

The Professor of Mathematics, in an interview with our correspondent , warned that production of relevant manpower by these institutions might suffer an immeasurable setback should the current faceoff between the lecturers and the government persists.

Otunta, who described the institution as a mere glorified secondary school bereft of necessary infrastructure-blocks and basic amenities, said he took the bull by the horns to reposition it.

He enumerated steps taken in this direction to include the establishment of an information communication technology (ICT) centre, construction of guest house, access roads, office blocks, as well as the rehabilitation and renovation of dilapidated and ramshackle structures, using TET funds.

Others, according to him, were construction of boreholes, installation of 500KVA generator set, accreditation of more courses, employment of relevant manpower, adding that his eight-year tenure had been without any form student unrest.
