The Special Assistance to the Supervising Minister of Education, Lambert Oparah revealed to newsmen why the poly Lecturers are still On Strike.
Lambert Oparah said that the reason why the ASUP strike is still on was because of the hardline position of leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), which made the union embarked on another strike action.
`I personally attended several meetings initiated by the minister with ASUP representatives where he laid the cards on the table and urged the union to accept the offers made by government and end the strike,”he said.
“It is sad that each time, the union leaders would say they will go back to consult with their members, they end up rejecting the offers made.”
According to the Special Assistant to the Supervising Minister of Education, one of the contentious issues boarders on the payment of the arrears to the striking lecturers which the government has offered to pay them on two installments because of the huge amount involved but the union rejected it in writing.
“If they have now accepted the offer as originally proposed, the right thing to do is to communicate to the minister in writing as they did when the offer was rejected.”
Oparah however urged the union to call off the strike and allow academic works to begin in earnest.
