I received a mail from someone from the University of Uyo Community (name withheld) and I am putting it in the public space to scrutiny. I am reproducing the mail verbatim except that I have removed the first three paragraphs which the sender of the mail used to convey his appreciation for my modest efforts.
Please read below:
A particular interest for me is the rot in the procurement of academic transcript of graduates at the University of Uyo, which is supposed to be a right of the graduates. I discover that the university, funded by the federal Government of Nigeria is ripping off the people. It has become so bad that the cost of only one transcript is put at five thousand naira (5,000 .00) which is unprecedented. Initially, it was five hundred naira (500.00) and later one thousand (1000.00) during the previous administration of Prof. Akaneren Essien.
However, things took a really bad turn during the administration of Prof. Mrs Comfort Ekpo. Transcript procurement became the exclusive preserve of the rich who are the only ones that can afford five thousand naira (5,000. 00) and at the same time limiting the opportunities of our young graduates which most are unemployed and others poorly remunerated and can hardly afford such luxury. My brother the truth is that such outrageous increment of 500% is alien to any economic theorisation. The worst part is that the University is publicly owned and government funded, but yet such outrageous levy is made on a graduate whose grades were properly earned and all prescribed fees paid for examinations that lead to the said grades.
I think the highest the university should have levied, would have been administrative charges which cannot amount to five thousand naira for each copy. Okay my brother, what happens to a graduate applying for fellowship programme or scholarship for higher degree in three to four openings? It then means that such an applicant would have to cough out fifteen to twenty thousand naira which he cannot afford. To me it’s just not fair.
What do I then consider as a way out, In other climes, transcript are uploaded to university websites for easy downloading on a token. Better still, transcripts are issued and certified to last for a period of time and that means it’s subject to expiration. The university also have an option of reviewing downward the cost to an affordable amount.
The truth is that we have been suffering in silence here on this issue as there is no body to speak for us. The university alumni are not helping matters too. I am on my knees begging you to take this case up for us and seek justice for us the downtrodden, voiceless and defenceless people some state policies are out to emaciate. My brother we believe in you and know that you stand for justice and fairplay. Please sir, do take this challenge on our behalf as part of your personal calling and belief in guaranteeing an egalitarian society for all.
Although we as a people can never be able to reward you for always standing up for us, but we know the greatest rewarder of them that diligently seek Him is God Almighty. Thank you for bordering to read this long essay inspite of your busy schedule. It is truly borne out of a deeply worried and concern heart.
