THE Federal Government, on Wednesday, release the 2014 admissions list of successful candidates who have been offered provisional admission into Federal Government Colleges across the country.

Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, who gave the approval in Abuja, said he was satisfied with the admission exercise conducted by the National Examination Council (NECO).

As a result of fierce competition and the need to get the most qualified candidates, the Federal Government ,this year, re-introduced aptitude tests in the admission processes into the Unity Schools.

This new initiative saw the prospective candidates writing two different examinations .

The minister, declared during the conduct of the aptitude test that merit will henceforth, play a major role in the admission of students into the 104 Federal Unity Colleges.

He insisted that merit be placed above other considerations such as catchment area, environmental factors and state quota because of the need to inculcate the right values in the future generations.

The Minister said that the re-introduction of aptitude tests in the admission of Federal Unity Colleges was aimed at ensuring that only the qualified candidates are admitted into the Federal Unity Colleges.

He said: “This successful conduct of the aptitude test is a step towards enthroning merit in our federal unity colleges. We have re-positioned these schools in terms of facilities and quality of teachers, hence subscription for placements have increased tremendously.”
Approving the release of the admission list, Barr. Wike, said that from reports he received from independent monitors across Nigeria, the aptitude tests went on peacefully because of measures put in place by the Federal Ministry of Education and National Examination Council.

He assured Nigerians that the Jonathan administration will continue to consolidate on the gains of the successes recorded in the basic education sector.
