TAX enforcement officials from the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Abuja, at the weekend and arrested the college Bursar of the College of Education, Warri, Delta State, Mr. Patrick Igho, over unpaid VAT and Withholding Tax (WHT) totaling about N49 million owed by the institution.

The officials led by Delta State monitor, Mr. Eze Chimaobi had for several hours held meetings with the Acting Provost, Dr. . Mrs. H. O. Oniyama, the bursar and the Acccountant in an effort to get the college pay the debt .

But Oniyama insisted the college had no funds.

The FIRS officials pleaded with them to at least make a commitment and pay some amount from the huge sum owed but Oniyama said only the substantive provost who was away could approve any payment.

When the Provost, Dr. Sylvester s. Ebisine was contacted via phone by FIRS officials, he told them bluntly that the college would not pay the money and that they could go ahead and close down the institution. This comment annoyed the FIRS officials who arrested the bursar and took him to Abuja.

It was gathered that on May 20, 2013 FIRS officials audited the accounts of the college and on June 3, 2013 the audit findings were conveyed to the college vide letter referenced: FIRS/SSSZO/2013/019/01679486-0001 and a meeting convened for same date .

But the college did not attend and no objection to the audit findings was raised.

On November 18, 2013 another letter referenced FIRS/SSZ/2013/020/01679486-0001 was dispatched to the college for the payment of the liability. The college, it was learnt, did not respond. warranting another letter with reference; FIRS/SSZO/2014/037/11141146-0001, to be sent to the college as reminder of its liability and the requestto pay within 14 days.

The college again did not respond.

The South-South zonal coordinator, Dr. Anuya. F. O, said “the college has shown high disregard for the Federal Inland Revenue Service and compliance with the provisions of tax laws, and consequently should pay liability of N38,879,155.38 for VAT and N10,269,181.68 for WHT”. gathered that Provost orders closure of school.
