Report reaching has it that, the Governing Council of the Federal Polytechnic, Oko in Anambra has cleared its Rector, Prof. Godwin Onu, of allegations leveled against him by the host community.

The Chairman of the council, Dr Christian Odukwe, told newsmen in Oko on Wednesday that the rector lacked the power to carry out some of the things he was accused of.

He urged the petitioners to get the right information about the powers of the rector before making any allegations against him.

He said that contrary to the accusations, the rector had no powers to relocate the institution from its permanent site.

Odukwe also said that Onu, a non-indigene of Oko, could not direct or influence the cultural activities of masquerades, nor instigate the clash between the masquerades and students in 2012 as alleged.

On the membership of the governing council, the chairman said the rector also had no powers to appoint its members, explaining that such appointments were made by President Goodluck Jonathan.

“The petitioners are therefore advised to await the decision of the president on the host community membership; the council will be advised accordingly,’’ Odukwe said.

He said the rector had shown utmost courtesy and respect in all interactions and engagements with the former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme, pointing out that the rector had initiated projects aimed at honouring the former vice president.

He said there was the need for peace, good neighborliness and harmony between the school and its host communities.

A group known as Oko People’s Union had sent a petition to the board alleging that the rector planned to move the polytechnic to his home town, Ezira.

The group also alleged that the rector instigated the masquerade crisis, which led to a clash between the students and the indigenes of Oko in 2012.

The union also alleged that the rector caused other communities hosting the polytechnic to seek to have representatives in its governing council and that he lacked respect for the former vice president. (NAN)
