Report stemming out from the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has it that the institution admit 12,650 students out of 114,700 students that applied to the institution for the 2014/2015 academic session.

The vice chancellor of the institution,  Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali disclosed that only 41, 470 applicants scored 180 marks, saying this was the minimum requirement that qualified them for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination screening.

He added that those that passed the post-UTME screening and qualified were only 22, 601.

“The total number of admitted international students were 80 and the total number of admitted students were 12, 650,” he added.

Addressing fresh students of the institution during matriculation ceremony on Monday, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali, in his speech titled “Arise and Fly”, urged the students to make good use of the golden opportunity given to them.

He said; Today’s occasion calls for both celebration and sober reflection. This is because out of over 114,700 candidates that sought to be admitted into the University, only about 12,650 of you have been offered a place. This is due to your brilliant performances at both the University Matriculation Examination (UME) and the Post University Matriculation Examination (PUME). While congratulating you for this remarkable achievement, I make haste to urge you to make the best use of the golden opportunity presented by your admission into the University of Ilorin. You need to stay conscious of the expectations of your parents as well as the enormous sacrifices they are making to see you through school at this point in time. You must, therefore, make a personal commitment not to let them down.

The Vice Chancellor gave the breakdown of admitted students to include 80 international students and 12,650 indigenous students, making an average of 11 per cent of the total number of those that applied.

He also admonished them to spend their time wisely and always recognize their studies as your number one priority. Always seek to be on the right side of the law and shun all forms of criminality, including stealing, cheating, forgery and examination malpractice. The University has stringent rules guiding examinations, the breach of which is visited with dire consequences. Remember, what Abraham Lincoln said, “it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat”.

You must also shun all forms of cultism, because the University of Ilorin has a zero tolerance policy on cultism and anyone caught involved in cultism will be expelled and, thereafter, prosecuted. Note, however, that there are a number of legitimate associations which are registered with the Department of Student Affairs. Feel free to register and participate in the activities of these genuine associations
