UNILORIN ASUU completes first phase of N7.28m female hostel

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Ilorin chapter, has single-handedly completed the first phase of a N7.28 million female hostel.

The building was commissioned last week by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, the outgoing Chairman of ASUU, Professor Wahab Egbewole, said the need to embark on the project”was informed by the mantra of our executive which is unionism for development.

He said: ”We have watched with consternation the plights of our children, wards and students struggling and scrambling for the limited number of rooms on the campus.

”A number of them have fallen victims of Shylock landlords and wicked neighbours while leaving outside the campus.
”We, therefore, resolved to contribute our quota towards alleviating the sufferings and challenges of these young and vulnerable minds by building an 80-bed hostel for the female students.”

However, speaking while commissioning the building, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ambali commended the leadership of the union under Prof. Egbewole for a pace-setter, saying the gesture was the first of its kind by any union since the history of the university.

He urged other branches of the union nationwide to emulate the leadership example of UNILORIN by emarking on such projects.
Meanwhile, a new executive has been elected by the ASUU, UNILORIN chapter, to run its affairs.

Dr. Abdlrasheed Adeoye of the Department of Performing Arts, Faculty of Arts is the new chairman with Ajibade Tajudeen of the Department of Geography and Environmental Management as his deputy among others.
